An Easton resident has been picked for a trip to the United Kingdom as an ambassador from the United States, but that’s only if she can finish raising the money she needs by a deadline Sunday.
Amber Worsley was selected to represent both the Lehigh Valley and the United States as a People to People Student Ambassador this summer in Europe. She is scheduled to leave July 7.
After fundraising efforts that began in May, Worsley as of today had raised close to $6,000. The 10th-grader, who is home-schooled, still needs $1,318.
Worsley, who went through an interview process before she was selected, said the purpose of the trip is to experience a globally diverse culture by meeting new people and becoming a better global citizen.
“When invited into this amazing program created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, I fell in love with their mission ‘to bridge cultural and political borders through education and exchange, creating global citizens and making the world a better place for future generation,'” Worsley said in a news release. “It’s everything I believe in and I feel honored to carry out President Eisenhower’s legacy.”
The People to People Student Ambassador Program offers international educational travel tours to all seven continents, according to its website. Headquartered in Spokane, Washington, the People to People Student Ambassador Programs are designed to benefit students from grades five through 12. They started more than 50 years ago.
If Worsley is able to raise the remainder of her funds, she will travel to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales for 20 days. There would be about 35 other Lehigh Valley students accompanying Worsley, including Bria Pickel, who attends the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts. Pickel said she was selected from a national scholar list she was placed on by her eighth-grade teacher.
